Luna, Rae, Kanani, Cricket, and Isobel are in for the summer of their lives working at Tuck and Cate's coed surfing camp. But these five girls are more than just counselors -- they're beach girls, best friends, and some of Luna Bay's top surfers.

Lately Luna's been stressing out while preparing for an upcoming surfing competition. She wants to do well, but living up to her mother's reputation as a former U.S. champion surfer isn't so easy. When Cate encourages her daughter to slow down, Luna thinks Cate doesn't believe she's good enough to follow in her footsteps.

At camp, Luna spots a boy who makes her heart rise like a wave. David, a newcomer from the East Coast, likes Luna, too, but there's just one problem -- he hates surfing! Will Luna be able to overcome her own fears and help David learn to love the harsh water? Or will their relationship and Luna's dreams come crashing down?

Rae hasn't been her usual self lately, and no one at camp seems to know why. Her crabby attitude is starting to affect everyone, including her best friend, Luna. When Luna catches Rae precariously riding the piers, she decides to confront her friend head-on.

Finally Rae admits the truth: Her parents have decided to separate, and even worse -- her father's company is relocating him to Chicago. Luna, Rae, and Kanani travel to Florida's Sebastian Inlet to compete in a regional women's long-boarding competition. Upon arrival, Rae and Kanani both set their sights on James, a handsome yet reckless local surfer who flirts with both girls and manages to drive a wedge between them.

As the competitions are about to begin, an unexpected tropical storm brewing in the east starts heading directly toward the area. On impulse, James goes out to enjoy the huge waves created by the oncoming storm not realizing it's about to become a full-fledged hurricane. While the surfing event is put on hold indefinitely, Rae and Kanani are forced to wait out the storm together as they hope for James's safe return.
